Garbarek appeared only on others' recordings for the next few years Vitous' celebrated Universal Syncopations among them and didn't issue a All For You - Jan Garbarek - Jan Garbarek - MP3 Collection (CD 1) (CD) of his own until 's In Praise of Dreams. On it, Garbarek handled most of the instruments himself. The set's only other players on the recording were violist Kim Kashkashian and drummer Manu Katche.

That same year he guested on Monodia by pianist Tigran Mansurian and Kashkashian. He also played on Katche's solo effort, Neighborhood, inand his daughter Anja's Briefly Shaking. Dresden was a double-disc set that included new and earlier work played by a quartet that included Katche, Bruninghaus, and bassist Yuri Daniel. Inthe saxophonist and the Hilliard Ensemble collaborated again, this time on Officium Novum.

While their first effort offered music from the 14th and 15th centuries, and their sophomore outing Mnemosyne contained music of a more contemporary variety, this outing was comprised of music of a distinctly Eastern sensibility.

Its primary focus was on compositions written or adapted by Armenian composer Komitas Vardapet The album was more successful commercially than either of its predecessors and placed near the top of classical, jazz, and crossover charts.

Two years later, ECM issued a series of archival recordings that included the saxophonist: First, a stunning live performance by Gismonti, Garbarek, and Haden entitled Magico: Carta de Amor. It was followed by Sleeper from a gig by Jarrett's European quartet, and finally, Weber's Resume, consisting of live performances between The following year, the label released Eleni Karaindrou's retrospective, Concert in Athens, which was recorded in Garbarek appeared on more than half of the album's 18 selections.

The following year, ECM, as part of its 50th anniversary celebration -- and also of the saxophonist's signing with the label -- released Remember Me, My All For You - Jan Garbarek - Jan Garbarek - MP3 Collection (CD 1) (CD), a live effort from Garbarek with the Hilliard Ensemble, recorded during their farewell tour.

More than 15 years separate the release of Jan Garbarek's best-selling album Officium from his Officium Novum. The newer release, like the original, features Garbarek on soprano and tenor saxophones and the male vocal quartet the Hilliard Ensemble.

In both albums, Garbarek takes pre-existing vocal pieces and embroiders them with his soulful obbligato contributions. The chaste austerity of the men's voices and the reedy plaintiveness of the saxophone make for a surprisingly effective pairing.

Garbarek and the singers manage to merge two very different musical worlds without compromising the integrity of either, and that is part of what gives these albums such an impact.

The first album used primarily Medieval and Renaissance material -- All For You - Jan Garbarek - Jan Garbarek - MP3 Collection (CD 1) (CD), motets, and liturgical song -- while this second mostly uses more recent source material, primarily from Eastern Europe.

In addition to several medieval sources, included are works by the early 20th century Armenian priest, musicologist, and composer Komitas; Nikolai N. Like the first album, this one is suffused with a sense of distant mystery and a profound, All For You - Jan Garbarek - Jan Garbarek - MP3 Collection (CD 1) (CD) melancholy that is given voice with intense feeling. Even the flute sounds unpleasant here. On later decades Garbarek would become one of my biggest jazz favourites with his Scandinavian, airy and elegant style referred as "fjord jazz".

It is the sequel to the album "Officium". Mind you: this has nothing to do with rock - it is an album of a classical vocal All For You - Jan Garbarek - Jan Garbarek - MP3 Collection (CD 1) (CD) and Garbarek's melodies and improvisations on top. The album title is slightly misleading, really. Nor does the album follow the service structure of a traditional "Mass" in classical music with Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Gloria etc there is the Armenian Orthodix equivalent of a Sanctus here, though, and a Litanybut is a somewhat haphazard collection of loosely connected tunes with a common spiritual theme.

Musically the listener is in for a highly enjoyable and pleasureable experience here. The music itself is varied, ranging from 3rd century chants to contemporary music an a capella piece by Arvo P'rt and a couple of new Garbarek tunes.

The uniformity of expression, however, means the tunes do not feel disparate but as a nicely crafted whole. This is music to immerse yourself in. I'd lie back in bed with some good headphones. It is music for those who are open to the spiritual - religious or otherwise many of the tunes are in Armenian, so you probably won't get the lyrics anyway.

Wonderful though it is, I cannot give it quite the score it could have had. First, the music is drenched in reverb, too much for my taste. It was recorded in some room or other at a remote Austrian monestary, presumably with stone walls and the mic some whay away from the performers. I really would have liked a somewhat dryer sound. As it is, the feeling I get is it's a bit too remote, too aloof, as if they don't really care whether anyone's listening or not. Garbarek's exquisite but icy tone on the soprano sax adds to this, and for me the warmer tenor sax works better, feels more inclusive.

I guess it's in keeping with the ancient traditions of the orthodox church, however, whose liturgy has remained virtually unchanged for well over years, All For You - Jan Garbarek - Jan Garbarek - MP3 Collection (CD 1) (CD) believe. You feel the ancient spirit of the chant of the monks going about their unchanging daily routine of prayer. I'm reminded of Gregorian chants now and again, although this is not Gregorian, of course, which is Latin, and all the music is polyphonic. I also find a full hour is a little too much.

I couldn't keep focus throughout. A thoroughly enjoyable experience nonetheless. Lie back in bed and relax, meditate or whatever, and allow yourself to be transported. It's a quartet effort, pianist Bobo Stenson marked as equal to Garbarek.

Stenson is a fantastic artist in his own rights, and if you generally enjoy piano as the lead instrument in jazz, you'll find it easy to enjoy this album. The opening piece 'A.
